Mike Trout and Albert Pujols each hit one of the Angels’ five home runs, and Los Angeles beat the Cincinnati Reds 9-2 on Monday night. Trout went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs, joining Alex Rodriguez as one of two players to score 100 runs five times before his age-25 season. Pujols hit his 586th homer, tying Frank Robinson for ninth on the career list. Kole Calhoun was a triple short of the cycle, and C.J. Cron homered among his three hits for the Angels. Matt Shoemaker allowed two runs and seven hits over seven innings. After giving up a two-run homer to Joey Votto in the first, Shoemaker settled in to win his third straight decision. Dan Straily allowed seven runs in 2 2/3 innings.
Ohio State’s depth at wide receiver took a hit Monday when the university announced Monday that Torrance Gibson has been suspended from school for unspecified reasons. Coach Urban Meyer said the suspension was not related to football, and “I disagree with it.” He didn’t comment further. The university said Gibson was suspended for the fall semester for violating the student conduct code. Gibson is a redshirt freshman quarterback-turned-receiver. Coaches said he was to be in the mix at wide receiver with Noah Brown, Corey Smith, Parris Campbell, Austin Mack and others. The Buckeyes open the season at home Saturday against Bowling Green.
The San Diego Chargers say they’ve signed rookie defensive end Joey Bosa to a four-year contract. The announcement late Monday morning came five days after the two sides went public in their nasty spat over payment of Bosa’s $17 million signing bonus and whether the contract would have offset language. The Chargers threatened last Wednesday to reduce their offer to Bosa under the assumption he wouldn’t be ready to play a full season. Bosa, the No. 3 overall pick out of Ohio State, was the last rookie to sign. It also came a day after San Diego’s defense played poorly in a 23-10 exhibition loss at Minnesota.
The Cleveland Browns have released linebacker Paul Kruger, a startling move in another step in the team’s youth movement. Kruger started 46 games and made 18 sacks in three seasons for Cleveland and was considered one of the team’s leaders. He was signed in 2013 after four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. Last week, the Browns traded linebacker Barkevious Mingo. The Browns also terminated the contracts of defensive end Nick Hayden and quarterback Austin Davis. The team waived kicker Travis Coons, giving Patrick Murray the starting job.
