The Athens County Sheriff’s Office is currently seeking the whereabouts for two inmates that escaped from 13 West Washington Street, Athens, while in custody today July 9, 2018 at approximately 2:56pm. Missing are: Brian Chaney (pictured left) age 25 and Tyler Howard (pictured right), age 31. Chaney was wearing an orange shirt and pants and Howard was wearing a green shirt and pants. Both men were barefoot and have several tattoos. Please notify law enforcement immediately if you encounter these individuals. Both should be considered dangerous. Do not attempt to apprehend them.
Release from Sheriff Rodney Smith July 10, 2018
On July 9, 2018, at approximately 2:56 p.m., two (2) inmates escaped from a Transportation Officer while they were attempting to load numerous inmates into a transport vehicle. The inmates, identified as Brian Chaney Jr. and Tyler Howard, fled separately on W. Washington Street in Athens, Ohio. Immediately, Deputies, Athens City Police, Ohio University Police, Ohio State Highway Patrol, & Athens County Court Constables began searching the immediate areas. Athens County 911 sent out an emergency message to approximately 14,000 residents in Athens warning citizens to be on the lookout for the 2 escapees. Citizens began calling 911 with sightings a short time after the message was sent out. At approximately 4:56 p.m., Tyler Howard was located on the porch of a residence on Walker Street in Athens, by the Athens Police Department, after numerous calls were received of him being in that area. Howard was detained and then transported to the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail (SEORJ) without incident.
At 6:23 p.m., Athens County 911 received a call from a SEORJ Correctional Officer stating that he had located and detained Brian Chaney at the main entrance of O’Bleness Hospital. That officer was at the hospital conducting a medical transport of another inmate, when he recognized Chaney walking into the facility and detained him. Chaney had removed his orange jumpsuit and was wearing normal clothing at the time of his arrest. Chaney was transported to SEORJ without incident. Charges of Escape will be sought against both Chaney and Howard. Chaney is currently being held on previous charges of Escape, Domestic Violence, and Obstructing Official Business. Howard is currently being held on charges of Domestic Violence, Aggravated Menacing, Tampering with Evidence and Felonious Assault.
