REMINDER: Ohio University’s Athens campus prepares for planned power outage
ATHENS, Ohio (Dec. 14, 2018) – Ohio University’s Facilities Management and Safety has scheduled a widespread power outage during Winter Break to allow for improvements to the Athens campus electrical distribution system. An outside contractor will perform the project, with the bulk of the work occurring at the substation adjacent to the Facilities Shop at the intersection of Riverside Drive and West Green Drive.
The project will improve the resiliency of the electrical supply on campus by removing outdated electrical equipment and increasing cable sizes to restore redundant electrical feeds to campus. These updates may support OHIO’s ability to respond more quickly to unplanned outages in the future.
The 16-hour outage, planned to begin the evening of Friday, Dec. 21 and last through the morning of Saturday, Dec. 22, has been scheduled during non-business hours just before Winter Break Closure to minimize impact to the Ohio University community. In the effort to fully prepare campus for the potential impacts of this power outage, Facilities Management and Safety leaders have communicated this plan individually and in group settings with OHIO leadership and multiple departments.
Since inclement weather conditions, including extreme temperatures and precipitation, have potential to disrupt this project, several dates have been selected for the outage. Chief Facilities Officer Steve Wood will determine whether the outage occurs as planned on the primary date, or is rescheduled for one of the backup dates.
- Primary – December 21 from 6:30 p.m. to December 22 at 10:30 a.m.
- Backup – December 28 from 6 p.m. to December 29 at 10 a.m.
- Backup – January 4 from 6 p.m. to January 5 at 10 a.m.
Buildings and areas that will not be impacted by the planned outage include:
- The Ridges
- West State Street Research Park
- Columbus Road buildings
- 9 Factory Street
- Bingham House
- Konneker Alumni Center
- Pilcher House
- 31 S. Court Street
